The Hobbit: An Unexpected Review

1 Resorts World. 4 cinemas. 1 movie. The Hobbit monolpoly.

Epic. Yan lang nasabi ko sa aking pagbabalik sa Middle-Earth. I missed the place so much kaya nung napanood ko ang The Hobbit, it really felt nostalgic. After seeing the Lord of the Rings trilogy years ago sa big screen and now this - this has to be EPIC.

Pero okay nga ba ang movie? Dahil nga ba prologue sya ng Lord of the Rings kaya mahihirapan syang makapantay ang greatness nung tatlong pelikula? Was it over-hyped? How about yung casting, okay ba sila o parang Kim Chiu lang umarte? Well, here's an unbiased assessment of the film.

Casting - Nung nakita ko yung bida playing as Bilbo (the main protagonist), namukhaan ko agad sya! Sya yung sidekick ni Sherlock Holmes! NOT the movie Sherlock Holmes but the brit TV series Sherlock Holmes. Magaling sya. Actually mas nagalingan ako sa kanya kesa kay Elijah as Frodo. He looks innocent yet witty. Funny but sometimes too serious. maganda ang character development sa kanya which I wished ginawa din nila sa mga characters na first time lang makita sa Middle-earth. Yung ibang dwarves parang comic relief lang ang peg at wala masyadong moments. Para lang silang mga dwende ni Snow White.

The usuals like Gandalf, Gollum and the Elves, well, they're sharp as ever. It's really nice to see them on sceen again, parang gusto ko silang i-group hug.

Length - Sulit na sulit ang pera mo sa haba ng pelikulang ito. Almost three hours ang film at siguradong ubos ang chichirya mo bago lumabas ang credits. Sa mga nagsasabing mabagal ang simula ng pelikula, well, baka sila lang yung typical viewers ng movie NOT the actual fans of the LOTR series. Di ako na-bore sa film. I thought na-hold naman ng pelikula yung interes ko til the last minute. Sure, may mga times na maraming blah blah pero siguro nga mediocre LOTR fan lang ako kaya yung ibang dialogues sounded foreign sa akin. Pero I'm sure para sa mga die-hard fans bawat salitang lumalabas sa bibig ng mga characters ay parang balahibo ng manok na kumikiliti sa kanilang mga geeky bones all over their body.

At some point, I felt na parang medyo streched out yung pelikula. I mean, pwede namang paigsiin ang isang eksena pero pinahaba nila. I understand na yung book na The Hobbit is the shortest (pun intended) of all the LOTR books so baka nga yun ang rason.

Quality - Like what I've said, the movie is EPIC. Mas epic pa kay Epic Quizon (WEHH???). Seriously, I am almost sure na magugustuhan ito ng kahit sino. There's action, funny moments at higit sa lahat a good story. Kahit di ka fan ng LOTR I'm sure you'll still find the movie very interesting. Lalo na kung ikaw ay fan ng LOTR - baka maluha luha ka pa kapag nakita mo ang opening scene. Middle-Earth once again! One gripe though, the film is inconclusive. Meaning... BITIN!

Verdict - It's a good movie to watch bago mag pasko at mapalitan na ng Manila Film Fest entries ang bawat sinehan sa pinas. Sana nga ma-achieve na natin yung ganitong klaseng mga pelikula. Di naman sa tuta ako ng kano o ano pa man, pero I think it's time for us para maka-kawala na sa traditional formula natin sa paggawa ng films. Kundi horror na gulatan infested, drama na ang istorya ay about sa kabit tapos pukulan ng maaanghang na linya, o kaya comedy na punong puno ng slapstick at one liners na WALA namang kabuluhan ang story.

Hay... about sa The Hobbit nga pala ito, well I give it 8/10 stars. Epic pero may room pa for improvements. One thing for sure, mas epic naman 'to sa Enteng Kabisote movie so watch it!
